RIVERS
Slovenia... The land of beautiful rivers...
The Northwest is the best...
In the heart of Europe at the southeast edge of the alps lies the green, mountain country, of Slovenia. It is the only country in the world with the word "love" in it. The landscape says it all. The country is unspoiled, with more than 60 percent of the land's surface covered with forest and it has just 2 million inhabitants. Slovenia
has a lot to offer for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
And with more than 20.000 kilometers of fishable rivers, It's a
true paradise. Especially for us fly fishermen.
14 magical rivers, 200km to fish...
In the northwest of Slovenia, on the southwest side of Triglav National Park, you'll find the Soca river system. She makes her way over 200 million-year-old limestone, which makes the water exceptionally clear. The last ice age left a mineral resin in these mountains that cause a vibrant and unreal-looking blue or green tone to the waters. Additionally, the river bottoms are light in color with white gravel beaches, surrounded by densely forested alpine mountains. The fishing possibilities in this region are some of the best in the world, and the whole area itself is special in so many different ways. You must see it to believe it.
In this amazing area, you find the Soca river and its tributaries. Together they have a length of 200 kilometers.
It has wide and slow rivers, wild and intimate rivers and amazing canyon stretches with plenty of unique wild fish like the Marble trout. The rivers themselves are in pristine shape, flowing naturally, and are almost untouched by human influences or other regulations. Because of the abundance of options, it is impossible to choose only one favorite river. This whole river system is special. Once you have fly-fished here you'll be sure to return.
Who manages these rivers?
These rivers are divided into 3 districts which are managed by The Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia, the fishing club of Tolmin and the fishing club of Idrija. They sell fishing licenses from different selling points in the valley or online. With one license you're allowed to fish in multiple rivers during the day. To buy a license you only need to provide a passport
or ID card. There is no state license needed. It is all fly only water and catch and release fishing is promoted.
